Dear GM Bolt & BMW i3, You've Got It Wrong.

I love that GM has stuck to it's guns on producing the Volt, what I would drive if I were interested in Hybrids, and now the Bolt the all electric car.....but I keep seeing headlines saying things like GM's new electric could upstage Tesla.

I look at that car and the first thing that comes to mind is the BMW i3, an undisputed ugly car. I think all of the experiments with odd looking electric cars from the past several decades has proven that the general public is not interested in driving an electric car that looks like, well an electric car. The Bolt and the i3 both suffer from that case of severely ugly design. Maybe the large companies that make these are doing it on purpose. Maybe it is just what they have to do to fit in a bazilliam watts worth or batteries to make the cars have a decent range but the point is, part of the success of Tesla is that, whatever their shortcomings, the Tesla cars have been great looking cars, and unless you knew what you were looking at, could easily be mistaken for regular cars with ICE engines. Just look at this 2011 Roadster. &WIDTH=624&HEIGHT=300&AUTOTRIM=1

It's a damn attractive car! So is the Model S! Just look at it! It brings up a car lust in me that I usually reserve for Jaguars. Do you get that feeling when you look at the Bolt? Do your loins stir just thinking about how good it is? Does the Bolt rustle your Jimmies? No? Me either.

While what we have seen of the X isn't quite as attractive as those before it, it is still a damn sight easier on the eyes than the other offerings from GM and BMW.

(if this image is to be believed, you know how things can change)

Even the Nissan Leaf, despite looking like an afflicted frog, is just weird enough to make you like it better than the Bolt.

I mean, I'm not saying either of those cars are going to be bad from a quality standpoint. Probably they will be better simply because of the smaller number of moving parts, but it's like the saint Fred Sanford, as those of you of a certain age may remember, was known to say "Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly is to the bone!"
